From a distance a bog doesn’t look like much. It’s relatively flat, usually no trees and doesn’t appear to have much going on. It’s when you step into the bog and spend a bit of time with it that it comes alive. In the middle of summer it is brimming with color. Purple from the heather, various shades of lime green and deep red from the plush sphagnum moss, brilliant orange from the bog asphodel… The different plants and flora in the bog truly make a rainbow. Standing in the middle of a bog in Connemara creating this painting I truly felt at peace and appreciated the detail and beauty of somewhere that has taken thousands of years to form.
