THE GREEK ISLES

The idea for this Greek collection came after our trip to Mykonos last year. We had the best time exploring the island, eating amazing Greek food, and swimming in beautiful turquoise water. It made me think back to a trip that James and I took to Greece in 2017. We explored Athens and then spent a week on a sailboat exploring different Greek islands nearby. It’s where we got engaged so that trip holds a lot of special memories. I guess I’ve been planning on creating paintings inspired by Greece since then, but this recent trip really reignited the idea.

We are heading back to Greece this summer - Crete this time and I’m excited to find inspiration for even more artwork. I feel like this collection has really pushed me to dive deeper into the impressionistic style that I love, focusing on light and shadow, people and atmosphere. While on a sailing holiday in Greece we visited Ermioni and wandered around the cobblestone streets and swam in the refreshing turquoise water. After a long day in the sun what is better than watching a beautiful sunset by the sea? While on a sailing holiday in Greece we spent a few days exploring Epidavros and hiked up to this spot to watch the sunset with a bottle of wine. I love the soft dusky colors, not just in the sky but also in the shrubs and hills. I wanted to capture that sense of calm and quiet. There’s a nice balance between soft muted colors and pastel sunset tones.

Sipping white wine and eating some of the best seafood on the island, that’s Kiki’s Tavern in Mykonos. I love the light and shadow play of this painting. In 2017 my husband James and I were on a sailing trip in Greece visiting some of the islands off Athens. We stopped in beautiful Poros and loved exploring the cobblestone streets and swimming in the sea. One afternoon when we were headed back to the sailboat we came across a fisherman untangling nets in his boat, with two hungry cats patiently waiting nearby for their lunch. This image made me smile so much and has stuck with me ever since. I’ve had so much fun finally painting it and I’ve painted it in a impressionistic style with a play on light and shadow. Up close there’s sweeping brush strokes and bursts of color and from a distance it’s a playful scene of two harbor cats waiting for their lunch.
