Spring Dance of the Beech Leaves

This sweet bluebell scene was painted en plein air in the bluebell woods near where I live. I haven’t seen a more beautiful display of bluebells anywhere else! I think it’s a mix of the beautiful purple blue flowers as far as the eye can see and the stunning beech trees with twisty vines growing up them and their young vibrant green leaves casting shadows dancing on the trunks.
It’s a place that feels magical.. you just know fairies live amongst the flowers. For me, photos don’t capture just how etherial it feels to be in there. Being able to take my paints in and get the right shade of purple and green and paint how the light dances across the leaves and flowers is the only way to really recreate what it’s like being there.

This painting captures the shadows of the young beech leaves on the ancient trunks and bluebells as far as the eye can see. Each spring the leaves unfurl and begin a beautiful translucent bright green, almost yellow. They bounce and dance in the breeze and create the most beautiful shadows on the trees. As the weeks go on and the leaves fill in the canope, you lose those lovely shadows so it’s a special window when this happens.

Painting in the bluebell wood has become a tradition for me, one I look forward to each year.
