When you go out to paint you never know what you’re going to get. So when the sky turns pastel pinks and oranges and just gets more and more vibrant as the painting goes on it’s really special. I paint this scene a lot. The lough, the mountain, the tide out. Every painting is always different, each unique and special. But I think my favorite are the evenings. The light, atmosphere and colors are so beautiful.

My favorite viewpoint in the north of Ireland! Ballynagelty also known as Kodak Corner is luckily right on our doorstep and one of my favorite places to go up and paint. I created a small study of this scene and then went back to my studio to capture this large scene. I love the complimentary blues and oranges. It creates this tension of warm and cool. The trees in the forground make it feel like you are just peaking out at the view of Carlingford Lough and Slieve Foy.

This extra wide canvas would be such a statement over a sofa or above a bed.

Almost every day I walk down to the waterfront and look out at Carlingford Lough. I find the sea so calming and grounding. I love that you can look at the same scene day after day and it can change so much. I love when the clouds are low and atmospheric. This painting evokes a sense of calm and serenity. The texture creates movement in the water and you can imagine the mist rolling down the mountain.

I think these colors are so calming and would look stunning over a sofa or above a bed.

Whitepark Bay on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast is one of my favorite places in the world. The white sand beach is stunning and you have panoramic views of the beach as you’re walking down to it. There’s large sand dunes behind the beach with bunnies roaming around and in the summer the most beautiful magenta wild poppies. It always amazes me where you find pops of color and seeing the deep pink flowers so tall and proud amongst the dunes was really special. It’s a place I hope to revisit every year.

I did a wash of pink on the canvas first to act as a warm backdrop to the whole painting. I kept the sky really loose and just a wash to allow the pink to come through and kept everything else really soft to help the poppies pop!

Almost every day I walk down to the waterfront and look out at Carlingford Lough. I find the sea so calming and grounding. I love that you can look at the same scene day after day and it can change so much. This was one of my favorite times looking out across with the dramatic clouds rolling down Slieve Foy and softy dreamy colors. I just felt so lucky to be there in that moment.

I had so much fun painting this - the largest painting I’ve ever created. I think these colors are so calming and would look stunning over a sofa or above a bed.

A view I see daily, the iconic Fairy Glen walk in the village I live in. The most scenic and known view in Rostrevor that has for sure been painted and photographed a million times - and rightly so! Beautiful ivy covered cottages, the Glen River, lush trees and mountains around. I love this evening summer glow on the cottages and in the sky. It gives the green trees a subtle orange glow as well. I don’t often paint buildings but these ones were really fun to paint and I love the pop of the coral orange roofs against all the green.

On one of our local hikes there’s a lovely spot at a called Kodak Corner. As you can imagine it’s called Kodak Corner because it offers beautiful views looking across the water. I hiked up with my paints one day and painted the view of Slieve Foy and Carlingford. The water was pure turquoise and the sun was shining. It was such a lovely day and a lovely spot to paint!

Standing in the Kilbroney meadow listening to the Sunday church bells. The evening light was casting long shadows from the trees and lighting up the grass in golden light and the distant hills in a lovely cobalt blue. This painting transports me right back to that moment.

The beautiful Keep at Narrow Water Castle. The Keep sits just along the river and it’s such a stunning little building against the natural landscape. I love this view of it with the fields and mountains in the distance. It was so striking in the morning winter light.

I could look at this view of Carlingford Lough forever and am so grateful it’s just down the street from where I live. I painted this beautiful scene basked in that golden hour glow. The sun casting a glow on the hill and mountain, the water choppy and lively.

This painting is inspired by a time we stayed at beautiful Clonalis House in Roscommon. When we woke up there was a low mist over the fields lit up in gold just waiting for the sun to burst through. Hares darted through the long grass. It was such a beautiful early morning scene, like something out of a master’s painting.

A serene gray overcast day looking out to sea. These sailboats are a really iconic view if you’ve been to Rostrevor. It’s like they’re just patiently waiting to be taken out onto Carlingford lough. I am really drawn to muted tones and moody skies and I feel like this painting really captures that!

I could look out at the sea all day and find it so serene to paint! I love this spot at Bloody Bridge looking up towards Newcastle. The day I painted this it was very very windy and I had to sit low with my easel hoping the wind wouldn’t blow it over. I think that’s what contributed to the waves crashing so energetically against the rocks.

That last glow of golden hour hitting the waterfall coming down from the Mourne Mountains. This serene spot is at Bloody Bridge. I tried to capture all the beautiful colors of the water as it tumbles down through the rocks. When I painted this the sun had just gone behind the mountain but there was still a beautiful evening glow. I think the pop of golden yellow from the gorse adds to the magic of this beautiful painting.

One of my favorite paintings I’ve ever done! The ground under this tree along the river has completely eroded away and it’s amazing it hasn’t fallen down. It was basically begging to be painted! The day I was out capturing it, it was overcast but dry. I was nearly done with the painting when it began to rain. Normally with oils that’s not a huge deal but I use water mixable oils so the rain started to mark my canvas and wash paint down my palette. I hurriedly covered the painting until the rain stopped and then resumed the painting as quick as possible before it started raining again. You can still kind of see some of the marks left by the raindrops. I love that this painting transports me back to this serene place and time.

I was painting along the Fairy Glen, a riverside walk in the village I live in. A man stopped to chat for a few minutes and mentioned that the stones just up from where I was painting were known as “The Stepping Stones in case I ever decided to paint them.” So of course the next week I did!

In this painting you can feel the sun is just about to peak over the trees and boats as it basks the distant mountain in an early morning glow. I could look at this view of Carlingford Lough forever and am so grateful it’s just down the street from where I live. A light breeze is breaking up that early morning glassy water. I’m not supposed to have favorites, but this is definitely one of my top 3 favorite paintings I’ve made.. I think because this view is just so iconic locally and a firm favorite for me personally.

I love capturing atmosphere in my landscape paintings. Seeing a moody dramatic sky excites me so much! This painting has really lovely chunky dramatic clouds. The low misty clouds are almost completely covering Slieve Foy, the mountain across the water from where I live in Rostrevor. Just the peak at the top of the mountain is visible. I really went for texture with this painting. It adds to the shape of the mountain and the water feels like it’s moving and rippling.

A moment captured playing along the Glen River basked in the evening light. Stay Present is a promise, a reminder that these little moments are what really matters. This has to be one of the paintings I’m most proud to have painted. I am inspired by the old masters like Joaquin Sorolla have had the desire to paint people into my landscapes for a while. I think in this painting you can really feel the setting. The chunky white paint that reflects the light on the water, the midges adding atmosphere, the balance of cool and warm, dark and light.

In Kilbroney Park, just by where we live in Rostrevor, there’s a beautiful large meadow that fills with lovely buttercup flowers in the early summer. The yellow waxy flower adds such a bright lovely joy and lights the meadow up in gold. It’s also one of my son’s favorite flowers so they are extra special to me!
