Top tips for buying art as a gift

For a lucky few, buying art for a loved one comes naturally. Spying the perfect piece with a loved one in the back of your mind swiftly leads to their ample appreciation of their new found framed treasure, which obviously rests in a prime spot above their mantel. However for many of us, the choice to buy art as a gift can lead to scouring the internet for hours on end in search for inspiration while questioning how well you know your best friend.

But despite the considerations you have to make when buying art, few gifts are as memorable, heartfelt and timeless, and anyone who has had the pleasure of tearing off bubble wrap to reveal a lovingly chosen piece of art will tell you the same. To effectively choose a piece of art that will be cherished for a lifetime, check out my tips!

  1. Art doesn’t have to be expensive - If you’re looking for something unique for a friend on a budget, art could be just the ticket. Prints are an affordable and amazing gift, packing the thoughtful punch of an original painting but at a fraction of the cost.

  2. Don’t get too many opinions - It’s always helpful to get a second opinion when buying a piece for a friend or family member (especially from someone who knows the recipient well) but seeking out too much advice could just make you confused. When in doubt - be brave and go with your gut feeling.

  3. Consider their space - Furniture choices are a good way to gauge somebody’s taste in art. Are they a vintage lover with a weakness for a flea market or do they have an eye for more contemporary pieces? It’s not always the case but keeping their furniture style in mind can often help choosing pieces that will look and feel right at home.

  4. Can it be framed easily and inexpensively? - When searching for unframed art, make it as easy as possible for your loved one to get it framed themselves. Standard sizing such as A4 or A3 is always a safe bet since you can guarantee there will be a wide range of frames to suit them and the piece.

  5. Find a deeper meaning - Gifting art that evokes nostalgia or fun memories is often the most touching. From a sunny beachy print that brings back memories of a summer spent at the coast with your best friend to a flirty botanical original painting featuring the same blooming petals in your sister’s wedding bouquet or mother’s cherished garden will always be treasured. If there is one tip to remember, make it this one.
