Inspired: Lesley Murphy

InspiredLauren EngelComment

Who is she: Travel blogger from The Road Les Traveled

What makes her inspiring: Lesley runs a really successful travel blog called the Road Les Traveled. I met her when I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was living there at the time so I reached out to her after I bought my one-way ticket and asked for advice about where to stay, what to do, etc. She was super friendly and helpful and we met up for lunch a couple times in BA. While her blog is usually filled with amazing travel photography and destination recommendations, recently it’s been filled with stories about boobs.. her boobs to be exact. Lesley’s mom had breast cancer three years ago and she recently found out she carries BRCA2 gene which means she has a high risk of getting breast cancer herself. She took her health into her own hands and elected to have a preemptive double mastectomy. Instead shying away from social media and going offline during this challenging time in her life, she’s documented every step of the process on both her blog and Instagram. She’s shared her thoughts and fears, how to throw a ta ta to the tatas part, photos from her surgery and the process through the reconstruction. While it’s lovely looking at gorgeous photos from around the world, it’s refreshing to see someone with influence to talk about something so personal and difficult. Her openness and positivity through the experience has been so inspiring.

Inspired: Ashley Longshore

InspiredLauren EngelComment

Who is she: Ashley Longshore is a hilarious and talented pop artist.

What makes her inspiring: If you don’t follow Ashley Longshore on Instagram, you should. She is a successful pop artist who draws inspiration from fashion, icons and greed. She churns out painting after painting that are bedazzled with beautiful crystals and have cheeky phrases and characters such as Gucci Jesus. Her work is beautiful and she has a long list of celebrity clients and incredible collaborations. Not only is her work over the top, but Ashley is a character herself constantly wearing oversized jewelry and sunglasses and says fuck a lot.
Ashley is hilarious and really inspiring to follow. Not only does she post her amazing work but she constantly posts motivational and inspirational quotes along with her own positive thoughts. In a recent post she wrote “I hope that today you say fuck it, and make the decision to live the life you have always wanted.. it is not the easy way, but it IS the better way… live a fulfilled life chasing your dream not someone elses. Your time is precious. I love you!”
She also encourages artists to skip the galleries and promote themselves and for art enthusiasts to purchase art directly from the artist (since galleries typically take anywhere from 50% - 70% commission). She’s making waves in the art industry and doing it her own way and encouraging other artists to do the same.

Who is she: Natalie Sission aka The Suitcase Entrepreneur

What makes her inspiring: I have been listening to Natalie’s podcast and following her blog for a few years now. Natalie left her home country of New Zealand in 2006 and has been traveling full time since 2008. She has built a multiple six figure business while globetrotting and helps people build businesses that give them more freedom in their lives. Whether that’s as a digital nomad or to spend more time with family, she’s all about building your life in a way that gives you the freedom to live how you want.
Everything you want to do has been done before so why not learn from someone who’s already done it? In her podcast she interviews business people and entrepreneurs to give her community of “freedom fighters” insight into the tools and tricks they use to run their businesses successfully. Listening to her podcast helped me take the plunge to head to South America and illustrate full time. She helped me realize that there’s no “right time” and how important it is to start before you’re ready. If you want more freedom or more adventure in your life be sure to check her out!

Inspired: Carissa Moore

InspiredLauren Engel3 Comments

Who is she: Carissa Moore is three time world champion pro surfer

What makes her inspiring: I had the privilege of meeting Carissa back in 2011 after she won her first ASP Women’s World Tour Championship. At the time I was a news producer in Hawaii and we featured her on our morning show. At the age of 18 she was making major waves in the sport and has continued to push the industry since. Not only is she an accomplished athlete but she has used her platform to talk about important issues such as body image and women in athletics. Even being the best woman surfer in the world and one of the best surfers in the world, she’s criticized about her body. By talking about it she’s able to point out how ridiculous it is that society cares more about what women look like then what they accomplish. She promotes the importance of loving yourself and she’s kicking ass in a male dominated sport.

Inspired: Ocean Ramsey

InspiredLauren EngelComment

Who is she: Ocean Ramsey is a scuba instructor, free diver, model and most notably a shark conservationist. She became well known when a video of her swimming with white sharks went viral.

What makes her inspiring: Sharks play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem and are being over-fished to the point of extinction. She hopes that by sharing her experiences with sharks, she might inspire others to take action and help protect these amazing creatures before it’s too late. She believes that in capturing and exhibiting images of sharks and humans interacting peacefully and intimately she can help change the way people think about sharks.

As a scuba diver and shark enthusiast myself, I’m so inspired by her efforts and for giving these misunderstood creatures a voice. Every interaction I’ve had with a shark has been magical. They look at you with such curiosity and intrigue and getting up and close with them it’s obvious they aren’t mindless killers like the movies and media portray them to be. I think what Ocean Ramsey is doing is so important and the way she’s educating people and taking action is a true inspiration.
